Peaches – The IndigO2, April 26th 2013

Gender identity. Sexuality. Religion. Big themes for a Friday night, but ones that Peaches raced headlong into as a matter of course during her set at the IndigO2 as part of the Sundance Festival.

Dirty, jerky, fast and loud, we were treated to a spectacle of music and dance. There was a mixture of live and pre-recorded vocals from Merrill Beth Nisker, aka Peaches. She took to the stage in a skin-tight gold number, topped with a wig complete with skulls.

This was discarded a couple of songs later and replaced with a bunch of breasts (Bounty of breasts? Pert of breasts? Bubble, Whoopla, Plethora, Abundance of breasts? Bevy, Mass, Mantle, Mountain Range of breasts?) slung over her shoulders with Barbie doll heads in the place of nipples. If you were so inclined, I’m sure you could read meaning into this.

Two dancers joined her during some tracks, dressed or sometimes undressed in various guises including a dildo strapped to the head and religious robes. At one point they ‘burnt’ a bible.

I would talk about the music, but to be honest, I can’t remember a single song she sang. The show was all about the performance. The music and visuals, the energy and excitement. It was a brilliant evening and highly recommended for the non-faint-of-heart. My mother-in-law was supposed to come with us. It’s probably good she couldn’t make it.

With extra special thanks to @badclaire, @chosenturbo, @kellyr2401, @hey_whatsoever and @indiegopop on Twitter for their amazing suggestions of what a collective noun of breasts should be.
