Lulu James – Birthdays, April 11th 2013

Lulu James is one of the most exciting new acts that I have had the pleasure to see this year. She came to my attention supporting Jessie Ware at Shepherds Bush Empire; “A revelation”.

Last weel was her first headline show in London and it was to a packed room at Birthdays in Dalston.
She was ably supported by Brolin, a talented, mask wearing vocalist.

Check out his song Reykjavik. It’s excellent!

It would be wrong to write about Lulu James and not talk about her outfits. She arrived on stage in thigh boots and a cape with a hood so oversized that it covered her whole head. The first song, Now The World, was performed through the cape. As Dare began, Lulu discarded the cape and revealed her outfit for the night, a blue and white hooded poncho dress covered in a web of gold chains. These chains also fell over her face and the crowning glory was a beautiful golden beard! Unconventional, maybe, but she looked stunning and unique.

The set was brilliant. She performs like she’s been doing it her whole life. She commented on the crowd and asked if we were to cool to sing along. There didn’t appear to be a single person there who cared more about seeming cool than relishing in the show. The excitement and enjoyment of the audience was clear.

As well as her outfits and stage presence, Lulu James has the voice. My god, she has a voice on her. Closer got the biggest reaction of the night. She also debuted the brilliant Hey, a song so new that even her record label hadn’t heard it.

The show was held together by the mighty Dave Okumu in the DJ booth. As well as fronting in The Invisible, he co-wrote and produced Jessie Ware’s Devotion. A complete legend if you ask me!

Here’s a prediction for you: Lulu James is going to go from success to success. See her live in a small venue while you still can.

On a side note, we went to Rita’s Bar and Dining, the restaurant at Birthdays, before the show. J ate Bacon Brittle – bacon, toffee, peanuts and rosemary. So there you go. I bet you didn’t know that was a thing.
