AlunaGeorge – XOYO, February 19th 2013

Since being shortlisted for the 2013 Brit Awards Critics’ Choice and coming second place in the BBC Sound of 2013 poll, duo AlunaGeorge have enjoyed some commercial and critical success thanks to a collaboration with Disclosure, which reached number 2 in the UK singles chart.

Their debut album Body Music is due to be released in June 2013 and based on their show at XOYO it deserves the same acclaim. George Reid, first on stage, pressed the button to start the show – “ A couple of years ago, I met a girl called Aluna Francis. We started a band called AlunaGeorge

Just a Touch started off the set with energy and flair. Aluna performs as if she was born on the stage. In sunglasses, baring more than a little midriff, she struts as she sings.

The hour long set included two covers, a sweet, light touch version of Frank Ocean’s Thinkin Bout You and a glorious rendition of Montell Jordan’s This Is How We Do It, which had the crowd singing and dancing along.

The last song, the brilliant Your Drums, Your Love, was the highpoint of the gig. Perfect pop, George sang along to himself, Aluna held out the microphone, though she needn’t have bothered. The crowd was singing already singing at the top of their voices.
