The Maccabees – Given To The Wild

The Maccabees – Given To The Wild

The indie minded Brits are already very familiar with the Maccabees. This London/Brighton-based band has just released its third album, which goes by the name Given To The Wild, and will hopefully mean a worldwide breakthrough for the lads.

The album opens with the Given To The Wild (Intro), where Orlando Weeks’ voice echoes ‘Given to the wild, given to the wilder ways, while the ways of a child, are whiled away’. Smoothly following into ‘Child’, the Maccabees third album opens gentle and slowly.
With ‘Feel To Follow’, Orlando’s voice really does well, as he questions ‘How will I ever dare to breathe it, when it’s over’. The track begins quite basic, just a basic drum sound and Orlando’s voice, before the track takes you into a moody and emotional rollercoaster.
Next tracks ‘Ayla’, ‘Glimmer’ and ‘Heave’ might be potential single material, although ‘Forever I’ve Known’ is one of the best tracks of the album. This track features a slow bass line, a crying guitar and an emotional Orlando before it picks up pace halfway through the track. Maybe even one of the best songs the Maccabees ever made…

First single ‘Pelican’ is the highlight of the album for probably a lot of listeners, with already lots of air time on the radio in the UK and abroad.
‘Went Away’ and ‘Go’ show that the Maccabees should be able to take the next step and become a popular band outside of the UK as well.
On ‘Unknown’, the Maccabees are noisier than other track on this album. And ‘Slowly One’ is indeed a slow, but beautiful one.
Last track ‘Grew Up At Midnight’ is yet another typical Maccabees track; starting slowly but growing towards a chorus of nostalgia with ‘we grew up at midnight, we were only kids then, but that night we knew’.

Verdict: 4/5
Given To The Wild is the Maccabees best album so far. The album does not become boring or dull halfway through the album, the structure of the album is quite clear with a neat and humble opening towards harder and more powerful songs towards the end (as long as you stay away from your shuffle option).
